Course Information:

Sign up today for Great Lakes Driving Academy’s Segment 1 Driver’s Training Course, designed to help young drivers earn their Level 1 Learner’s License in the State of Michigan. To enroll, students must be at least 14 years and 8 months old and have parental permission.

*Please bring an original copy of the child’s birth certificate on the first day of class and completed registration documents when registering.

The Segment 1 course spans four weeks and includes:

• 24 hours of classroom instruction
• 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving instruction (minimum)
• 4 hours of behind-the-wheel observation (minimum)

This course follows the State of Michigan-approved AAA curriculum, focusing on rules of the road, defensive driving, and building safe driving habits. To successfully complete Segment 1, students must finish both the classroom and driving portions, as well as pass the written state test. Upon completion, students will receive a Segment 1 Certificate of Completion.

Note: The Segment 1 Certificate of Completion is not a permit to drive. It must be taken to the Secretary of State to obtain the Level 1 Learner’s License.

Behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction will be conducted in a fully insured, dual-controlled vehicle and will begin once the student has completed a minimum of four hours of classroom instruction. BTW instruction will be completed within 6 weeks from the start of class. This may occur after the classroom portion is completed.

Cost per Student Driver: $425.00*

*$50.00 per driver deposit due at registration. The final payment of $375.00 is due by the first day of class in the form of cash, check, or credit card (additional 3.5% fee) .

*Cancellation Policy: If cancellation occurs within 2 weeks of the start of class, the $50 deposit will not be refunded​​​​​​. However, you can choose to transfer your deposit to a future class date.

To attend classes at Great Lakes Driving Academy, you must download, complete, and sign the Michigan Segment 1 Driver’s Training Contract, along with any other required documents. These forms are essential to ensure you meet all the necessary requirements to begin your driver’s education journey.
