Segment 2 Driving Requirements & Course FAQ’s

Review the requirements for Michigan’s Segment 2 Driver’s Education. The course will discuss topics relating to defensive driving, high-risk behaviors, drinking and driving, and road rage, and will help to prepare the student for their Road Test. Upon completion of Segment 2 and the Segment 2 state test, a driver's education Segment 2 Certificate of Completion will be issued.

To enroll in Segment 2, a student must have a valid Level 1 Learner’s License for at least 3 months and have completed a minimum of 30 hours of on-the-road driving with a parent, legal guardian, or, with parental permission, any licensed driver over 21. At least 2 of these hours must be nighttime driving.

Yes! Students can take Segment 2 with Great Lakes Driving Academy regardless of where they completed Segment 1.

Students must provide their Segment 1 Certificate of Completion, their Level 1 Learner’s License, and a driving log or parent certification verifying completion of at least 30 hours of on-the-road driving.

Segment 2 consists of 6 hours of classroom instruction covering defensive driving, high-risk behaviors, drinking and driving, road rage, and preparation for the Road Test.

After successfully completing the Segment 2 class and the Segment 2 state test, students will receive a white Segment 2 Certificate of Completion.

Yes. If you are under 18, completing Segment 2 is required by the State of Michigan to be eligible for the Road Test.

Students are eligible for the Road Test once they have:

1. Held their Level 1 Learner’s License for at least 6 months,

2. Completed the Segment 2 course, and

3. Completed at least 50 hours of on-the-road driving with a parent or legal guardian, including a minimum of 10 nighttime hours.
