In order to enroll in Segment 1, the student must be a minimum of 14 years and 8 months old and have parent permission. Please bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate at registration.
The Segment 1, four-week course, consists of:
- 24 hours of classroom instruction
- 6 hours of behind the wheel driving instruction (minimum)
- 4 hours of behind the wheel observation (minimum)
* If you are under the age of 18, you are required to take Segment I by the State of Michigan in order to receive a Level 1 Learner’s License.
Segment 1 follows the State of Michigan approved AAA curriculum and will focus on the rules of the road, defensive driving, and safe driving habits. The student will finish Segment 1 by successfully completing both the classroom AND driving instruction portions of the course, AND the written state test. The student will then be issued a green driver education Segment 1 Certificate of Completion.
*Please note: The Segment 1 Certificate of Completionform is not a permit to drive. It MUST be taken to the Secretary of State office to obtain the Level 1 Learner’s License.
Behind the Wheel (BTW) Instruction
Great Lakes driving Academy will conduct BTW instruction in a dual controlled automobile that is fully insured to cover each student enrolled in the program. BTW instruction will not begin until the student has received a minimum of four hours of classroom instruction. BTW instruction must be completed no later than three weeks after the classroom instruction has been completed.
